The CIC 101 is a multi-capability unit designed to provide care for the pre-term infant. Various critical situations may arise when providing such care, and the CIC 101 meets the requirements. It delivers radiant warmth to the neonate cradled in its oval shaped bed. It has a resuscitation/CPAP unit and a pulse oximetry unit (which uses the well established Masimo® technology). It has a built-in weighing scale, and the bed may be tilted to Trendelenberg- and Fowler-like positions. The CIC 101 has a large panel on which vital parameters are displayed or trended over 24 hours. It has a unified alarm system that produces alarm signals when the baby’s parameters move out of user-settable ranges. This equipment is also provided with IV poles and instrument trays.

The baby-friendliness of the CIC 101 is evident in various ways. The alarms are ramped so that the infant experiences little disturbance. And the gas-assisted bed tilting system is smooth. The baby does not have to be shifted when X-rays are to be taken or the weight measured: the X-ray cassette slides under the bed conveniently. The weights of nappies, caps and accessories are automatically discounted from the measured weight. The bed permits the infant and mother to be close together. Using the flow based CPAP unit, IPPV may be applied so that the baby breathes with little effort.

The care-giver will readily appreciate that the CIC 101 is friendly to the doctor or nurse too. The graphic display is clearly readable from across the NICU itself. The controls are intuitive and menu-driven. Access to the infant is easy due to the unique shape, pioneered by Phoenix. The bed may be swiveled quickly in emergencies. The height of the bed may be adjusted using foot-operated controls. In addition to producing audible alarms when the baby needs to be attended to, the CIC 101 turns on a winking pilot lamp for quick identification in a ward with multiple patients.

Intelligent alarms are produced for different situations. There is intelligence in the non-contact infrared sensing system which protects the infant from overheating in the event of dislocation of the thermistor based temperature sensor. An optional CCD camera may be mounted on the warmer unit to facilitate remote monitoring of the unit. The CIC 101 is mounted on castors with foot-operated brakes, and so it may be shifted and positioned wherever required. These and other features validate the CIC 101’s claim to be the most sophisticated neonatal open care system available today.
